Serenity

I went to a free press screening (fanboy screening) of the upcoming movie, "Serenity," the continuation of the "Firefly" series that aired on Fox in 2002. While I could tell you what happened in the show, I'll skip over that and just tell you that you don't need to know all of that. The movie opens up with enough of an explanation of the universe you're in which you'll be immersed that you don't feel alienated. "Serenity" flows with witty and catchy conversation and very interesting characters without making it seem as if every line said is the utmost important life altering thing to be said. The story focuses around Simon and his sister and their back story is sown into the movie elegantly. This speaks highly of the story telling ability in this movie to take in any viewer who knows nothing about "Firefly" and give them a movie that is self-contained and brings sci-fi adventure to a new level. The special effects were not overdone, which is a credit to Universal and the producers of this film for recognizing that it isn't the special effects that make the movie, but the characters and the plot. Joss Whedon, the script writer and creator of the Firefly universe doesn't take the audience for granted, providing you with just enough surprises and shocks that make the story stronger. In any given moment, you'll wonder which of the main cast will die. In an era of sequels and novelizations, we sit back almost dispassionately, knowing full well that every main character will somehow survive. Our intelligence is not insulted here; we aren't given false promises of deaths. The movie is one long roller coaster ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat and when the ride is over, you feel wonderful, yet somewhat bothered. I strongly suggest you check it out when it releases on September 30. You won't be disappointed, and if you don't enjoy the movie that's because you're an idiot and don't know anything about quality story telling.

Until next time, kids...
